Maths

At Acklam Grange School, we believe that mathematics is for everyone. Regardless of ability, background or future aspirations, every student deserves access to a high-quality mathematics education that develops confidence, resilience and a lifelong appreciation of the subject.
Mathematics plays a vital role in everyday life, often in ways we do not immediately recognise. From managing personal finances and interpreting data to engineering, healthcare and space exploration, mathematical understanding equips students with the skills they need to thrive in modern society. Strong mathematical knowledge enhances future employment opportunities and enables young people to make informed decisions throughout their lives.

Numeracy is a whole-school priority and is embedded across the curriculum. Alongside developing core mathematical knowledge, we ensure students see the relevance of mathematics beyond the classroom through real-life contexts, financial education and enrichment opportunities. These include initiatives such as our work with the WizeUp financial education charity, Keeping It Real Financial Maths Club and AGS Crackers Code Breaking Club. Through our Maths in the Working World initiative, developed in partnership with local businesses, parents, carers and former students, learners gain valuable insight into how our mathematics curriculum supports a wide range of careers and industries.

Our curriculum is ambitious, inclusive and carefully designed to meet the needs of all learners. We maintain high expectations for every student, providing appropriate challenge and support so that all can achieve their full potential. Through clear modelling, carefully sequenced learning and purposeful practice, we strive to remove barriers to success, build confidence and foster enjoyment in mathematics.

We aim to create a learning environment that promotes curiosity, independence, adaptability, reflection and critical thinking. Students are encouraged not only to become fluent in mathematical procedures but also to reason, justify and solve problems effectively. By thinking mathematically, students develop the confidence and skills needed to become active, informed and successful members of society.

Our curriculum is bespoke to the needs of our students and aligned with the National Curriculum. Learning is sequenced through a carefully planned programme of study that builds knowledge and understanding over time. Topics are revisited with increasing sophistication, allowing students to deepen their understanding and make meaningful connections across mathematical concepts.

To support long-term learning, content is broken into manageable steps that reduce cognitive load and enable students to secure knowledge in their long-term memory. Lessons build on prior learning, with regular opportunities for retrieval and review to strengthen understanding and address misconceptions. Through retrieval starters, low-stakes quizzes, reflection activities and dedicated improvement time, students are supported to consolidate learning, celebrate success and make sustained progress.

    Our Aims

    Develop Confident and Critical Thinkers

We aim to empower students to think critically, ask insightful questions and articulate their mathematical reasoning with confidence. Students are encouraged to explore different approaches, challenge ideas and develop a deeper understanding of the world around them.

Secure Mathematical Fluency, Reasoning and Problem Solving

We believe true fluency goes beyond memorising procedures. Students develop a deep understanding of mathematical concepts, knowing not only how to solve problems but also why methods work and when they should be applied. Through comparing, explaining and justifying their thinking, learners develop the higher-order reasoning skills essential for mathematical success.

Prepare Students for Life, Learning and Work

We seek to develop the mathematical knowledge, financial awareness and problem-solving skills that students need for adulthood. By connecting learning to real-life situations and future careers, we ensure our students are well prepared for further study, employment and the challenges of an ever-changing world.
