AGS Read to Succeed

The ability to read is at the core of both the students’ academic and social, emotional and moral development in school.  Furthermore, the ability to read directly corresponds to the ability to learn and is fundamentally related to the development of writing and speaking and listening skills.

It is our aim that all students understand that independent reading is intrinsically linked to success.  Our main objectives are to:

  • Establish the attitude that reading is valuable.
  • Encourage students to vary their reading choices and access challenging texts.
  • Create a culture where everyone is motivated to read, both in school and at home.

Read to Succeed

Read to Succeed is our in house reading scheme and all students must have a book in their bag as part of their equipment and are encouraged to read at home. Students than complete regular reading logs of what they are reading to enable their teacher to evaluate their progress.

50 books to read before you leave school

This is our selection of 50 aspirational reading chances designed to promote a wide range of genres. It includes old classics such as A Christmas Carol, To Kill a Mockingbird to the more popular recent reading literature of The Hunger Games and Wonder. This can enhance and widen our students’ literacy knowledge.

Talking Books and book of the month

Each month our book of the month and Talking Books pages are used to show a featured recommended read, and for individual staff members to share their love at reading and recommended choices.

Reading in school

Students are required to have a book in their bag and are supported in their selection of texts

Our tutor reading programme provides all students the sopportunity to access a range of literature.

In order for students to improve their reading ability it is essential that they are actively encouraged to read independently at home, as well as in school.

You will find a range of resources on our dedicated literacy website that can be used to support students when they are making their reading choices.
