City & Guilds Technical Award in Digital Technologies
In Digital Technology we aim to provide students with essential skills and knowledge to prepare them for the next step in their lives, whether that be further education, training or the workplace. For those that have selected to study a vocational course, we want them to fully experience an insight into the breadth of knowledge, skills and capabilities a study of digital technology provides.
Through Digital Technology we assess the application of digital skills through their practical use. We provide students with essential knowledge, transferable skills and tools to improve their learning in other subjects with the aims of enhancing their employability when they leave education, contributing to their personal development and future economic well-being. The subject encourages independence, creativity and awareness of the digital computing sector. The computing industry employs over 3.2 million people, or 1 in 11 jobs, as of 2019 and contributes £111.7 billion per year to the UKs economy.
Digital Technology will equip learners with a range of digital computing skills and provide opportunities to develop, in context, desirable, transferable skills such as research, planning and reviewing, working with others and communicating creative concepts effectively. We aim to challenge all learners, including high attaining learners, by introducing them to demanding material and techniques; encouraging independence and creativity and providing tasks that engage with the most taxing aspects of the National Curriculum. The ‘hands on’ approach that will be required for both teaching and learning has strong relevance to the way young people use the technology required in digital technology.
We want students to be able to think creatively, plan accordingly and execute their skills to the best of their ability. The enthusiastic team of dedicated teaching staff delivering the course are driven to provide students with the transferable skills they will need to be successful in this ever-developing technological world we live in. The subject naturally lends itself to supporting students in their other studies around the school and into their futures, including many links to design technology, numeracy and literacy.
In conclusion, Digital Technology provides the required theory and skills, explained through practice and real-life case studies and helps to raise new generations of skilful, informed and responsible citizens prepared for life in modern Britain.
