AGS Extra
At Acklam Grange School, we recognise the profound impact that extra-curricular activities have on a child’s personal development.
Navigating the questions: How do I make friends? What do I enjoy? What can I contribute? Where do I feel I belong? How do I feel about myself when my thoughts are my only company? What do I want to be when I grow up? Who do I want to be?
Through competency and connection, our young people develop resilience, and this prepares them for life in modern Britain — personally, academically, socially and emotionally. Activities offered within AGS Extra not only provide our learners with opportunities to explore their existing passions and interests but also ignite conversations and cultivate experiences they may never have dreamed possible or known to consider. By nurturing key skills for life — such as collaboration, communication and resilience — our young people can find themselves and find friends! We offer a wide range of high‑quality extra‑curricular programmes, delivered by passionate and knowledgeable staff, designed to support the growth of the whole child.
We believe that every learner should have the opportunity to engage in these enriching experiences, and we remind them daily. Our extra‑curricular offer spans a variety of interests that cultivate Civic Engagement, Arts & Culture, Nature and Adventure, Sports and Physical Activities, and Wider Life Skills. These activities provide learners with platforms to discover talents, ignite passions and explore new interests that may otherwise remain untapped.
Our extra‑curricular provision is a core part of our educational offer. To ensure full and active participation, we work to remove barriers, so every child feels wanted, welcomed and able to take part — making reasonable adjustments wherever needed. Whether it’s performing in a school play, excelling in a sport, creating code or learning a musical instrument, our learners are walking with purpose and pride towards accomplishment, with staff caring personally that they are there. The sense of personal growth gained through these activities is invaluable in building self‑esteem and resilience, preparing learners to face challenges both inside and outside the classroom. There is something for every learner, regardless of age, background or previous experience.
Our extra‑curricular programmes also serve as a key part of our Character Curriculum. Through group activities, learners work together towards common goals, celebrate each other’s differences and support each other’s success. These experiences foster teamwork and leadership skills, and provide learners with a safe space to express themselves and deepen their connections with peers and the wider school community. These moments of personal growth are invaluable preparation for life beyond school and reaffirm a true feeling of belonging and “family”.
Our extra‑curricular activities play a vital role in helping learners thrive — both in terms of academic performance and personal progress. Together, these experiences create a cohesive, holistic curriculum that educates the head, heart and hand, giving the AGS family and community, the upper hand. By giving our learners, the opportunities to discover their true potential, we empower them to pursue their dreams with determination and with the confident knowledge that “From little acorns, mighty oaks grow.”
