Modern Foreign Languages

MFL student with French teacher

"I love my French lessons because we learn something new every time and my parents are impressed I can speak French."

Year 7 student

75% of the world does not speak any English at all. 29 countries in the world have French as their official language. As the world and the global economy becomes ever more interlinked, it is important to recognise that we are not just from Middlesbrough, North East England, Britain or even Europe. We are all global citizens and we encourage our students to understand and embrace this.

Students have the opportunity to learn French and special provision is made for students wanting to study other languages, including but not limited to Urdu, Arabic, Spanish and German.

Use of IT is at the core of our MFL lessons as it is an integral part of developing students’ language acquisition. Students have access to authentic material through various resources.

We encourage students to participate in foreign visits to put their learning into a ‘real life’ context and also encourage exchange of letters with our partner schools and other experiences such as film studies and our French breakfast.
