Read to Succeed

“The more you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.”

Dr. Seuss, “I Can Read With My Eyes Shut!”

At Acklam Grange School we pride ourselves on empowering every child, ensuring that they exceed their expectations.  We strive not only to develop the academic achievements of our students but to develop the whole child with equal importance placed on their moral, social and emotional development. We aim for them to be fully developed citizens with the ability to communicate successfully in society and access further education.

The ability to read is at the core of both the students’ academic and social, emotional and moral development in school.  Furthermore, the ability to read directly corresponds to the ability to learn and is fundamentally related to the development of writing and speaking and listening skills.

It is our aim that all students understand that reading for pleasure is intrinsically linked to success.  Our main objectives are to:

Establish the attitude that reading is valuable.

Encourage students to express their own preferences and to access a range of challenging texts when selecting a range of reading material.

Create a culture where everyone is motivated to read for pleasure, both in school and at home.

Read to Succeed at School

All students are expected to have a reading book with them as part of their daily equipment and are encouraged to independently select a wide range of reading material. Our LRC has a wide selection of both fiction and non-fiction texts for students to select from.

Students are given access to a wide range of academic reading material across the curriculum, and they are encouraged to improve their reading ability through our whole school focus on developing vocabulary.

AGS Family Reading

In addition to our curriculum focused directed reading lessons, students are also given the opportunity to explore a range of challenging texts as part of our tutor family reading programme. Two tutor sessions per week are dedicated to the tutor reading programme and texts have been selected to challenge students and to develop both empathy and cultural awareness.

Read to Succeed at Home

Children who are encouraged by adults to read for pleasure believe that reading is a valuable and worthwhile activity and are more likely to continue to be readers in homes where books and reading are valued.

How can students be encouraged to read at home?

  • Discuss books together—talk about characters, events, opinions and predictions.
  • Use your home language when reading if English isn’t your first language.
  • Create protected reading time without distractions such as television.
  • Encourage reading in any form: comics, newspapers, graphic novels, factual books and websites.
  • Visit libraries often and model a love of reading by sharing your own reading choices.
