Domestic Abuse
Domestic Abuse (DA) is an umbrella term for many different types of abuse, such as controlling, coercive, threatening behaviour, violence or abuse, regardless of a person’s gender or sexuality. Some example relationships where domestic abuse can appear is parental, sibling, and friendships.
Different Types of DA:
- Coercive Control: This can include being told where to go, what to wear or being isolated from family and friends.
- Physical Abuse: This can include being punched, kicked, cut or being hit with objects.
- Emotional Abuse: This can be a pattern of behaviour where words, actions or manipulation is used to undermine, control or hurt another person’s feeling or confidence.
- Sexual Abuse: This can be within a relationship or being made to have sex with other people.
- Stalking and Harassment: This can be repeatedly followed or spied upon or receiving unwanted gifts or communication.
- Economic and Financial Abuse: This can be having money controlled or withheld from earning or receiving.
- Technology-Facilitated Abuse: This can include having messages, emails, social media monitored or deleted or having your devices tracked.
- Honour Based Abuse: This is when a crime or incident is committed by family members to protect or defend the honour of a family’s reputation or community.
- Honoured-Based Abuse can involve a range of crimes and behaviours such as:
- Female Genital Mutilation (FGM): This is a procedure which involves partial or total removal of the external female genitalia, or other injury to female genital organs for non-medical reasons.
- Forced Marriages: This is when a marriage is not freely agreed to and the young person is pressured, threatened or forced to marry against their own free will.
