What was your experience at Acklam Grange like?
My time at Acklam Grange was rewarding and memorable. The supportive environment and dedicated teachers helped me grow both academically and personally. It was a great foundation for my future.
Do you have a fond memory that you would like to share?
For my HPQ presentation, I organised a ‘fashion show’ where my friends walked the runway, showing how fashion has evolved through the 1900s. It was a different and creative way to present my project and I loved making a special memory with friends I didn’t usually have lessons with.
What person, class or experience most influenced you?
My English lessons with Mrs Crawford had a lasting impact on me. Even though my career isn’t a direct route from this subject, the skills I gained and the memories will always stay with me.
How did your education at AGS prepare you for your career?
My education at Acklam Grange School laid a strong foundation for my career. The support I received enabled me to excel in my GCSEs so that I could pursue further education. More importantly, the development of soft skills was invaluable, it helped me grow as a person and prepared me for the real-world challenges I will face as a civil engineer.
What has your career path been like? How did you get to where you are?
After completing my A levels, I began a degree apprenticeship which allowed me to work for a construction company while studying part time. This hands on experience has been invaluable in helping me apply what I learn in real-world scenarios and furthering my knowledge in the field.
What do you enjoy about your job?
What I love most about my job is the chance to meet new people within the industry. I also enjoy the combination of design and site work which makes each day different and interesting. Being a young women in a male-dominated industry has been testing at times, but the sense of achievement from the magnitude of the sites I work on and the responsibilities I have so early in my career makes the hard work worth it.
What skills have served you well in your career?
The skills I developed at Acklam Grange, aligned with the PRIDE values, have really helped my career. Perseverance got me through challenges in my A levels and degree apprenticeship. Respect helped me build strong relationships with colleagues. Initiative allowed me to take on responsibilities early in my career, while direction helped me set clear goals. Finally, expression improved my communications skills.
What advice would you give to current Acklam Grange students about their future?
Don’t conform to the expected route. Pursue your passions, keep an open mind and gather as much experience as possible. Most importantly, be the representation you wish you had!
