What was your experience at Acklam Grange like?
I enjoyed my time at Acklam Grange School. From the moment I walked through the school gates in Year 7 to the last days of Year 11, the school felt like a family to me. All of my teachers were supportive and ensured I had the best learning experience. Acklam Grange gave me endless opportunities to learn new things both in and out of the classroom.
Do you have a fond memory that you would like to share?
One of my most unforgettable experiences was the East Africa Expedition in 2019 for The Meserani Project. Even though I had already left school, I was still part of the project and had the opportunity to travel to Tanzania. My time there was truly life-changing—meeting new students, immersing myself in a different culture, and supporting both primary and secondary schools made a lasting impact on me.

Another incredible memory was completing the Duke of Edinburgh Bronze and Silver Awards. I have always wanted to step out of my comfort zone and try new activities, and this experience allowed me to do just that. Along the way, I met amazing people and created lifelong memories, from volunteering at a local charity shop to hiking through the stunning landscapes of the Lake District.
What person, class or experience most influenced you?
Mr Pacey was a brilliant teacher not just teaching maths but also the methods of revising for all of my subjects . Some of the revision techniques that he taught all those years ago I still use today.
Also another big shout to Mr Nelson who was my Geography teacher . He was another supportive teacher and went above and beyond making his teaching methods fun and engaging.
How did your education at AGS prepare you for your career?
AGS has provided a solid level of education that has provided me the foundations for life after school.
What has your career path been like? How did you get to where you are?
After I left School , I went to Macmillan Post 16 where I studied Engineering and Mathematics. I went through the traditional route of going to university studying Construction Engineering Managment at Northumbria University. After my second yearI successfully found a placement for 12 months working as an undergraduate engineer working on railway projects. I am still working at the same place where I did my placement and continued my role as an engineer.
What do you enjoy about your job?
I love the challenge of working at a construction site, where no two days are the same. One day, I could be on-site setting out foundations, the next, attending site meetings or working in the office. The best part is seeing a project come to life—driving past a completed job and being able to say, ‘I was part of that’. It’s an incredible feeling to know that my work contributes to something that can positively impact people’s lives.
What skills have served you well in your career?
Communication is key in construction and having the confidence to get out of your comfort zone to get things done.
What advice would you give to current Acklam Grange students about their future?
Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Don’t lose an opportunity just because you are afraid to ask questions – always be curious you never know what’s round the corner!
