Left Acklam Grange: 2014
Current position: Respiratory Specialist Nurse
Current Employer: South Tees NHS Foundation Trust
What was your experience at Acklam Grange like?
Acklam Grange is a great school with great teachers and so many inspiring people working there. I was the last year 7 group in the old school which was special.
Do you have a fond memory that you would like to share?
Playing guitar for the Duke of Gloucester on his visit to open the school.
What person, class or experience most influenced you?
Mrs Wilson was my head of year and really kept me passionate about music and playing guitar. Mr Flint was also a big inspiration to me as my PE teacher.

How did your education at AGS prepare you for your career?
I learnt valuable skills, in particular maths and English which are essential in my job as a nurse, as well as science which built my core knowledge for my career.
What has your career path been like? How did you get to where you are?
When I left school I went to study Health & Social Care and studied an Adult Nursing degree at Teesside University. Once I was qualified I worked for 2 years as a staff nurse on a respiratory ward and then another 2 years as a staff nurse in A&E where I was briefly a charge nurse, before becoming a respiratory specialist nurse which I have been for over a year now. I have been back to university to complete my clinical skills course and I am due to complete my masters in Non-Medical Prescribing at the beginning of 2025.
What do you enjoy about your job?
I love being able to help people in their own homes as well as in hospital and build relationships with patients. I enjoy making a difference to peoples’ lives in life or death situations which are challenging but rewarding.
What skills have served you well in your career?
My English skills are essential as I must write important letters to patients, doctors and other professionals. I utilise my maths when making decisions around medication as well as using science to understand the human body.
What advice would you give to current Acklam Grange students about their future?
Apply yourself. Make the most of your time in school because you only get one shot at it. By applying yourself now, it will save you plenty of time in the future.
