Name: Emily Skiba
Left Acklam Grange: 2010
Current position: Practice Nurse
Current Employer: NHS South Tees
What was your experience at Acklam Grange like?
Loved it!
Do you have a fond memory that you would like to share?
The excitement of the last day of year 11 totally oblivious that school really will be the best days of your life!
What person, class or experience most influenced you?
My form tutor was Miss Adam and she was just down to earth, funny and supportive.
How did your education at AGS prepare you for your career?
I learnt my time management in school and enjoyed sports leader awards where I gained confidence in teaching.
What has your career path been like? How did you get to where you are?
I qualified 2015 and started working on the Trauma ward JCUH until 2019. I did my mentorship in uni and completed trauma competencies. I then worked in Anaesthetics JCUH until 2022 where I attended trauma calls, cared for emergency surgeries, ITU patients and critical care patients especially during Covid. I moved to GP 2022 where I have completed certificates in asthma, copd, diabetes, cervical screening, contraception, vaccines, injections, bloods.
What do you enjoy about your job?
I love learning, meeting new people. In GP you get to know your patients and build up a rapport. I am a trusted member of staff and always have people at my door asking me questions. As stated in school “no question is a daft one”. Everyday is a school day and no one will ever know it all!
What skills have served you well in your career?
I must say I have excellent time management skills! I was always early to school, which followed to college and now to work. I have my own way of organising.
What advice would you give to current Acklam Grange students about their future?
Enjoy every minute of school but when you do go to the working world, you’re never too old to change your mind. Find a job you love. Work to live, not live to work!
