What was your experience at Acklam Grange like?

I loved it! I was an active member of the school and have many happy memories.

Do you have a fond memory that you would like to share?

Every moment. Particularly enjoyed the school shows at the little theatre and school talent shoes. I still have the paper clippings!

What person, class or experience most influenced you?

Mr Swann. He was amazing. Me and my husband (who was also in my year at school) still keep in touch with him.

How did your education at AGS prepare you for your career?

I remember the automatic career generator. It told me I was going to be on the west end and my second option was a social worker. It wasn’t far wrong. I ended up being a learning disability nurse. I always remember the 3Cs and use these in my class rooms now. Care, curtesy and consideration for others.

What has your career path been like? How did you get to where you are?

When I left school I started as a dancer and then progressed to being a dance teacher and bingo caller! I then decided I wanted a career change and applied for nursing and spent 15 years in the NHS before being successful in gaining a lecturer role at Teesside University.

What do you enjoy about your job?

Everything. Especially seeing the development of the students.

What skills have served you well in your career?

Compassion
Communication
Basic maths
English language
Biology

What advice would you give to current Acklam Grange students about their future?

Don’t jump in to a career without doing alot of research first. Make sure you are choosing an area that you want to be in. Not the job as it will change over the course of your life time.
