What was your experience at Acklam Grange like?
My experience at Acklam Grange was honestly really special. I always felt supported, both in lessons and personally. The teachers genuinely cared and were always there to help, whether I was struggling with something academic or going through a tough time outside of school. Looking back, it was a place where I really started to figure out who I was and what I wanted to do with my life.
Do you have a fond memory that you would like to share?
There are so many good memories, it’s hard to pick just one! Being part of the Aladdin school play was definitely a highlight — it was so much fun and brought a lot of us together in a different way. I also loved the school trips, like Flamingo Land, and all the little day-to-day moments with friends in class. Even just feeling supported in lessons and having teachers who believed in me are memories I’ll always carry with me.
What person, class or experience most influenced you?
There are several people who had a huge influence on me. Mrs Dixon, Miss Robson, and the entire year team supported me through some really difficult times. Their kindness, patience, and belief in me made a lasting impact. I’ll always be grateful for how much they cared. I also had loads of teachers who helped me really enjoy learning, especially in science and English, which ended up shaping the path I’m on now.
How did your education at AGS prepare you for your career?
AGS played a vital role in preparing me for my career. The support I got pushed me to do well in my GCSEs, which gave me the stepping stones I needed to get to college and eventually into medical school. Just as importantly, the personal support I received gave me resilience and confidence, which have been essential as I’ve gone through university. I’m now in my fourth year of medical school at Newcastle University, and I know I wouldn’t be on this path without the support and encouragement I received at AGS.
What has your career path been like? How did you get to where you are?
After finishing sixth form, I went straight to medical school at 18. I’m now in my fourth year and currently doing full-time placements back in Teesside, gaining hands-on experience in hospitals and clinics as part of my training to become a doctor.
What do you enjoy about your job?
I chose medicine because I wanted a career that combined a strong scientific foundation with the chance to work with lots of different people and make a real difference in their lives. It is a privilege to be able to care for others and help them through some of their most difficult moments. I love that medicine allows me to use science in a practical way while building relationships with patients. Being able to help people and support them in their health is incredibly rewarding and keeps me motivated every day.
What skills have served you well in your career?
Resilience has been key — the journey isn’t always easy, but sticking with it has made a big difference. Alongside that, having a strong academic foundation from my time at school and university has helped me tackle the challenges of medical training. Empathy and good communication are also really important for connecting with patients and colleagues.
What advice would you give to current Acklam Grange students about their future?
You can do it! Whatever you put your mind to, you can achieve it. Work hard, believe in yourself, and don’t limit what you think is possible. Stay curious, be kind, and make the most of every opportunity.
