What was your experience at Acklam Grange like?

It was one of the most memorable times in my life, I used to enjoy going into school everyday. I also made a good group of friends from AGS, and I’m still in regular contact with them.

Do you have a fond memory that you would like to share?

I used to really enjoy when the headteacher would do live streams at the end of every term and do prize draws for those who had good attendance and punctuality. I think it was called “in it to win it”. My attendance was always really high so it was always exciting to watch these as I always had a good chance to win!

What person, class or experience most influenced you?

I really enjoyed my GCSE maths class with Mrs Dunning (not sure if she’s still there) and history throughout years 7-11 with Mrs Galloway. All of the creative arts classes (drama art etc) were always fun too.

How did your education at AGS prepare you for your career?

It provided a stable foundation, from which I was able to build my skill set and knowledge further to achieve good A levels and enter into the career that I always wanted and which was right for me.

What has your career path been like? How did you get to where you are?

Post AGS I went on to do my A levels at Macmillan, I did biology chemistry and maths and was given an offer to start medicine from university of York at the end of year 13. I chose to defer entry and take a gap year during which I worked and travelled a bit too. Since then I have been studying medicine at university of York and have almost completed my degree. Next year I will graduate as a qualified doctor.

What do you enjoy about your job?

I enjoy meeting new patients, understanding their life experiences outside of their health conditions, and providing care with a holistic approach. I also enjoy my time on the wards, bonding with staff and patients, and seeing that the help you provided someone is really making a difference.

What skills have served you well in your career?

Communication is always a key part of any role and that is pivotal in my career. Furthermore leadership skills is something which is essential in any aspect of life but more so in my job role where all the fellow ward staff eg nurses, clerics, look to you for leadership. And lastly, just being friendly can go a long way, you never know who your networking with and how that can benefit you in the future so it’s always better to be kind!

What advice would you give to current Acklam Grange students about their future?

It’s hard to know what career path you want to choose at such a young age so make sure to explore all opportunities and research different career paths to see what suits you best. Ensure you have a broad skillset so you are adaptable and competent within any role you take on in the future and don’t forget to enjoy the journey!
