Papua New Guinea is in the continent called Oceania.

It is 8,990 miles from London, England to Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea. There are no direct flights to Papua New Guinea. It takes approximately 30 hours to fly there including a stop in Australia.

It is a group of islands located between the Coral Sea and the South Pacific Ocean.

It is located east of Indonesia and is 100 miles north of Australia.

Papua New Guinea is ruled by the Queen of England, Queen Elizabeth II. It has a Governor-General called Sir Paulias Matane. It also has a prime minister called Sir Michael Somare, it is his third term as prime minister.

There official languages in Papua New Guinea are Melanesian Pidgin, English and Hiri Motu. There are another 715 indigenous languages spoken in the islands.

Polynesian songs and dances include Peroveta Anedia, meaning "prophet songs ", and Taibubu. The best known celebration is the Singsing - a traditional song and dance festival complete with traditional tribal clothing and body decoration (shown on the left).


The main sports in Papua New Guinea include most football sports, including rugby, soccer, and Australian rules football. Other sports include cricket, volleyball, softball, netball and basketball.

Traditional food of Papua New Guinea include:

Mumu: This is a traditional dish combining pork, sweet potatoes, rice and greens. It is cooked in the ground over hot rocks.

Traditional cuisine of Papua New Guinea is based on root crops such as taro, kaukau and yams, sago and pig (cooked in the ground).
