04 July 2019

Four students from Acklam Grange attended The Key Awards 2019 to receive certificates for their hard work and support for the community.

Over the past year, Hemlington Linx and the Ethnic Minority Achievement Team at Middlesbrough Council have partnered to engage EAL (English as an Additional language) students and International New Arrival young people with youth provision and opportunities. The group met at Newport Community Hub every Monday to plan and deliver their projects. They worked hard to win funding for, organise and deliver community events.

The group consisted of EAL students, originally from Romania, who have been living in Middlesbrough between 9 months to 4 years. Many of the group were still learning to speak English. They presented their idea to panel, won £250 worth of funding and delivered a social action project that engaged 200 local residents from different backgrounds.

Congratulations and well done to Sebastian Chifani, Lorena Gorgan, Denisia Brumariu and Catalina Balan who were also presented with a ‘Headteacher Special Recognisiton Award’ and invited to Hot Choc with the Head!
