Modern Foreign Languages

"I love my French lessons because we learn something new every time and my parents are impressed I can speak French."

Year 7 student

75% of the world does not speak any English at all. 29 countries in the world have French as their official language. French is one of the 6 official languages of the United Nations and one of two official languages of the Olympic Games. As the world and the global economy becomes ever more interlinked, it is important to recognise that we are not just from Middlesbrough, North East England, Britain or even Europe. We are all global citizens and we encourage our students to understand and embrace this.

Students have the opportunity to learn French and provision is also made for students wanting to study other languages, including, but not limited to, Urdu, Arabic, Spanish and Polish.

Use of IT in all its guises is integral to our MFL lessons, using technology as a vital tool in developing students’ language acquisition and to provide access to authentic material.

We encourage students to participate in foreign visits to put their learning into a ‘real life’ context and also provide the opportunity to exchange letters with our partner school as well as a French spelling bee, involvement in Routes in to Languages events at Newcastle University amongst many more.
