Years 10-11

GCSE French - Edexcel

The main aims of the GCSE are to:

  • Develop the ability to understand and use the Target Language effectively for purposes of practical communication
  • Develop the ability to use the Target Language both imaginatively and creatively.
  • Develop an understanding of the grammar of the Target Language
  • Develop an awareness of the nature of language and language learning
  • Offer insights into the culture and civilisation of countries and communities, where the Target Language is spoken
  • Encourage positive attitudes to foreign language learning and to speakers of foreign languages and a positive approach to other cultures and civilisations
  • Develop students’ understanding of themselves and their own culture
  • Provide enjoyment and intellectual stimulation
  • Form a sound base of the skills, language and attitude required for further study, work and leisure
  • Promote skills which have a wider application such as information technology and learning skills (e.g. analysis, memorising, drawing inference)

The examination tests students in each of the four skill areas, listening, speaking, reading and writing.  A candidate may be entered for a higher paper in one skill area and a Foundation Level in a different skill area, if this is deemed appropriate.  During the two/three year course students will undertake a minimum of three controlled writing assessments and three controlled speaking assessments, two of which in each skill will be submitted for the final examination.

Having a GCSE in a foreign language shows employers and colleges that you are a good communicator and have developed independence and good organisational skills.  It also may help with university entry.

We live in a world where international communication and travel are an everyday reality for business and pleasure and the ability to speak a foreign language and demonstrate an understanding of foreign culture is an asset.   We have linked up with a French school and students studying French in KS4 will have the opportunity to exchange information with our partner school.
