“The teachers make sure learning is fun and relevant. They always show us how our learning links to our world now.”

Year 11 student

English provides a fresh and creative angle with which students can approach their studies in particular and their lives in general. English skills are essential for the workplace and everyday life, promoting independent and imaginative thinking that employers value.

The English Faculty at Acklam Grange School aim to develop students’ literacy skills so that they can examine, explore and create their own understanding within the subject, as well as across other curriculum areas.

We aim to teach a wide range of skills whilst offering a stimulating framework which supports all students in achieving their potential and engages their enthusiasm.

We believe strongly in the importance of reading, both for enjoyment and to aid whole school academic success. In addition to exploring a wide range of texts in class, all Year 7 and 8 classes have a timetabled lesson in the Learning Resource Centre every fortnight where students are given the opportunity to read individually as well as participate in group reading activities.  Year 7, 8 and 9 students are also given the opportunity for private reading at the beginning of each English lesson.

All students in Years 7, 8 and 9 will have access to a wide range of fiction and non-fiction texts, ranging from pre 19th century to the 21st century.  All students in years 10 and 11 will study both GCSE English Language and GCSE English Literature.
